The Post-COVID Workplace:Are you prepared?

The coronavirus Pandemic has put the terminology:Innovation to action.Workplace has shifted from what it used to be to what the situation permits it to be. Traditional methods are now scrutinized and questioned and adjusted or altered altogether. The reality now is the discovery that some routines and processes in organizations could be done away with yet the job will still be done and done perfectly!

What is Innovation?
Innovation in its modern meaning is ;a new idea, creative thoughts, new imaginations in form of device or method. Innovation is often also viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements, unarticulated needs, or existing marketneeds.

Peter Drucker wrote:
Innovation is the specific function of entrepreneurship, whether in an existing business, a public service institution, or a new venture started by a lone individual in the family kitchen. It is the means by which the entrepreneur either creates new wealth-producing resources or endows existing resources with enhanced potential for creating wealth.

One of the early models included only 3 basic phases for innovation. According to Utterback (1971), these phases were: 1) idea generation, 2) problem solving, and 3) implementation!). These phases boils down to Proactiveness,Creativity,Techonological and Leadership skills.

The world of work is changing with the increase in the use of technology and both companies and businesses are becoming increasingly competitive. Where does this leave an applicant or an employee? The need for Creativity and Problem solving skills can not be put aside. Whatever it is your organization or your prospective organization is doing ,some other companies are doing also. Hence you can not be the ‘no idea’ kind of employee or else you risk losing your value in that organization. A level of Proactiveness is also demanded to be a top notch employee,that is seeing a likely challenge and fixing it before it actualizes.

Video Conferencing and Web Conferencing are innovations (amongst others) that has kept businesses breathing despite the pandemic and has done a lot in saving time and resources amongst other things. It is evident that some business trips are needless and some power point presentations are not really necessary. Everyone (better still,majority of workers ) can work from home and churn out the same level of productivity (or more) while having time to do other things that keeps them creative and energized.

The Challenge:
In what ways can you make your organization perform better?
What skills will make you valuable, almost indispensable at work?
What problems have you identified and what solutions can you bring to the table?
What technology can you leverage on (or invent) to make your organization adapt to the pandemic and will be relevant for Post-COVID ?
(For Entrepreneurs) What are you doing or what do you plan to do to keep your business relevant this season?

CONCLUSION
At the end of the day, innovation is about more than just new ideas. It’s about employees engaging in new ways and contributing to the future development of themselves, their co-workers, culture and company success.
